Essentials of Parenting Education Professional Practice

About

In this free online course, students will learn the foundations of professional practice for parenting educators through interactive technology, videos, graphics, and readings in a series of seven modules.

In order to increase accessibility to the content covered in this course, there are two ways to access the modules: 1) Students can pass the full 7-module course for a certificate of completion (recognizing 4 hours of training); or 2) Students can opt to focus learning on a specific topic and review *individual modules.

*Please note: you will not receive a certificate of completion for accessing modules individually. In order to receive a certificate of completion, you will need to access the full course and pass a quiz for each module.

This course was developed by Oregon State University (OSU), and is deployed using an online learning system called Canvas. These are self-directed learning modules with no live instructor or facilitator. You can complete this course at your own pace with no assignments or due dates. Each module provides opportunities to reflect on your learning through self-assessments and a multiple-choice quiz.

General Information

Why should I consider taking this (free!) course?
If you are interested in learning the foundations of professional practice for parenting educators through interactive technology, videos, graphics and readings, then this course is for you! The course was designed to be as accessible as possible and can be completed at your own pace. There are seven modules, which each provide an opportunity to reflect on your own learning through self-assessment as well as a short quiz.

In addition, the course is required when submitting for recognition within the OPEC Recognition System and counts as four hours within workforce training towards Core Area 3 (Parenting Education Professional Practice).  Click here for more information on the Core Knowledge and Skills for Oregon Parenting Educators.

What do I get for completing this course?
You will receive a certificate of completion for four hours of training in Parenting Education Core Area 3 (Parenting Education Professional Practice).

How do I get started?
To get started, you will need a valid email address and access to the internet. You can enroll for the course here.

I enrolled in the course, but was not able to finish. How do I pick up where I left off?
The course will take an estimate of four hours to complete, however you are able to work through the modules at your own pace.

You need to login with your user name and password. At the home screen, click on your Dashboard, then the course (Essentials of Parenting Education Professional Practice). In the top left, you will see a tab called ‘Modules’, navigate towards the last completed Module (in bold).

Quizzes

I completed the quiz but did not pass. How many times can I retake the quiz?
At the end of each quiz, there is an opportunity to review the answers you selected and compare your answer to the correct answer. Take time to review your selections and the material in the module prior to retaking the quiz.

If you did not pass (with a score of at least 80%), you are welcome to retake the quiz until you pass (unlimited attempts). We will keep your highest score on record. You will need to pass the quiz in order to proceed to the next Module.

I am trying to access the next Module but keep getting a message saying that the next Module has not been unlocked yet. How do I move on to the next Module?
You will need to retake the quiz and pass (with a score of at least 80%) to move on to the next Module. There is no limit to the number of times that you can take a quiz and correct answers can be reviewed after taking the quiz.

Certificate of Completion

How do I access my certificate?
If you are taking this course to meet the requirements for the OPEC Recognition System, then you will have access to your certificate (after 24 hours) within the OPEC Recognition System (see the Home screen). If you are not planning to submit for recognition within the OPEC Recognition System, then you can email us at opec@oregonstate.edu to request a copy of your certificate emailed directly to you.

I completed all seven modules with passing scores but when I logged into the OPEC Recognition System, it does not show that I completed the course or show my certificate. What can I do?
It takes 24 hours for the completion status and certificate to show in the OPEC Recognition System. If it has been longer than 24 hours, please let us know by sending an email to opec@oregonstate.edu.

I used the individual module links and reviewed the content for all seven modules. Can you send me a certificate of completion?
Unfortunately, no. In order to earn a certificate of completion, you will need to take the full course and pass corresponding quizzes for each of the 7 modules. The full course can be accessed at this link. 

I have completed the entire course. Will my certificate of completion be recognized by The Oregon Registry?
Yes! We have partnered with The Oregon Registry and Oregon’s Home Visiting Workforce to make sure that the training hours noted on the certificate will be accepted in their system as well as the OPEC Recognition System. Categories for both the Oregon Registry (ORO CKC: Personal, Professional and Leadership Development) and Home Visiting Workforce Development (HV Core Comp: Professional Best Practices) have been included on the certificate for your convenience.
